PHRASAL VERBS

 Basic Phrasal Verbs in English:

A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a preposition or an adverb, or sometimes both. The combination creates a new meaning, often different from the original verb and the particle. They are very common in spoken and informal English.

Here are some of the most basic and frequently used phrasal verbs, categorized for easier learning:

1. Verbs related to movement and direction:

  • Go on: To continue, or to happen.

    • Example: "The meeting went on for two hours."

  • Come back: To return to a place.

    • Example: "He came back home after the trip."

  • Go out: To leave a place, or to attend a social event.

    • Example: "We're going out for dinner tonight."

  • Get in/on: To enter a vehicle (car, bus, train, etc.).

    • Example: "Get in the car, we're leaving."

  • Get off: To exit a vehicle.

    • Example: "She got off the bus at the next stop."

  • Run away: To escape from a place or person.

    • Example: "The dog ran away from its owner."

2. Verbs related to actions and tasks:

  • Turn on: To start a machine or a light.

    • Example: "Please turn on the TV."

  • Turn off: To stop a machine or a light.

    • Example: "Don't forget to turn off the lights before you leave."

  • Look for: To search for something.

    • Example: "I'm looking for my keys."

  • Give up: To stop trying to do something.

    • Example: "Don't give up on your dreams."

  • Take off: To remove clothes or an airplane leaving the ground.

    • Example: "It's hot, I'll take off my jacket."

  • Put on: To dress oneself.

    • Example: "Put on your shoes, we're going out."

3. Verbs related to communication and relationships:

  • Call back: To return a phone call.

    • Example: "I'm busy now, can I call you back later?"

  • Get along with: To have a good relationship with someone.

    • Example: "Do you get along with your new boss?"

  • Look after: To take care of someone or something.

    • Example: "Could you look after my cat while I'm on vacation?"

  • Talk about: To discuss a topic.

    • Example: "We talked about the new project all morning."

  • Find out: To discover information.

    • Example: "I want to find out who's coming to the party."

4. Verbs related to daily routine:

  • Wake up: To stop sleeping.

Význam: Vytiahnuť niečo z úst (napr. zub).

  • Príklad: "I need to have a tooth out." (Potrebujem si dať vytiahnuť zub.)

  • Slovenský preklad: Dať si vytiahnuť


Have to do with

Význam: Týkať sa, mať súvis s niečím.

  • Príklad: "This has nothing to do with me." (Toto so mnou nemá nič spoločné.)

  • Slovenský preklad: Mať niečo spoločné s

- častokrát nedajú doslova preložiť, je ťažké aj odhadnúť ich význam, hoci poznáme významy oboch častí, pretože majú svoj vlastný význam
